I guess this sounds stupid but I don't have a lot of friends. I mean, maybe you think I would because I seem like the type. I have no fucking clue what gave you that idea, but it's not really true.

I think the thing is that it's not that I don't have a lot of friends, but I'm not sure that the friends I have are actually friends, or if they're just people I know. There's a difference, you know? It's like if you have a coworker or something and they're cool at work and you talk to them there, but you don't actually hang out with them afterwards. You never do anything with them except talk to them at work, so does that mean they're really your friend or something else?

I've heard people say it like someone's their acquaintance or whatever and I guess that's as good a way of explaining it as any. I don't know. Call it whatever you want. Maybe they're still a friend but they're just not the same as other friends, and that's cool, too.

But, yeah, that's the thing. I don't have a lot of friends that I actively try to hang out with. There's... Caleb. Obviously. He's my best friend, so I want to hang out with him all the time. We're cool like that. And then Ethan's alright. Look, I know I fucked that one up, but I'm hoping we can fix that, pretend it never happened, ignore it, and move on. Or however you deal with shit like that. Fuck if I know.

But then, um... I have a couple other friends. Brittany's kind of my friend. I like her a lot, even if I'm jealous of her workout clothes and her cute cheerleader outfit. Whatever, Brittany. Fuck you, too.

And... so this is going to maybe come as a surprise but...

I think Ashley's my friend. Yeah. How stupid is that? I don't know. I never said I was smart. Sorry to disappoint you. I guess that's what makes all of this hard.

I haven't even known her for long. We met during the summer when Caleb invited me to his dad's campground. Ethan was there, and Caleb was obviously there, but then there's Ashley. She just stood there with Ethan, looking completely out of place.

Not only is it hard to imagine her as the kind of girl who goes camping during the summer, but it's hard to imagine her as Ethan's girlfriend. She's smart and cute and kind of funny in a weird way. It's a silly sort of funny, and I totally get why a guy would want her to be his girlfriend. I get it, Ethan. I do.

Ashley and I spent time together during the summer. More than I thought, actually. Ethan and Caleb went off to... do something. Fucking... discuss matters? I have no fucking clue. The way Ethan made it sound, they were saving the world. Caleb never really talked to me about it, which now that I think about it more is kind of weird.
